Prevention Curricula

The Coole School planners utilize a ten-month curriculum of prevention and awareness materials relative to alcohol, tobacco, violence and other drugs. The program is delivered on a daily basis by means of interactive planners. The planners were found to be scientifically accurate by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.

  • It is a research-based program complete with pre/post-testing and evaluation components.
  • It enhances "protective factors" and moves toward reversing or reducing known "risk factors." It teaches drug resisting skills, promotes personal commitments against drug use, strengthens social competency relative to communications, peer relationships, self-efficacy and assertiveness.
  • It contains a strong parent and caregiver component that reinforces what the children are learning-such as facts about tobacco and bullying and their harmful effects-and\opens opportunities for family and caregiver discussions.
  • It contains instructional materials for "life-skills" such as problem-solving, decision-making, resistance against adverse peer influences and social and communication skills.
  • It reaches the intended audience on a daily basis and has a duration that can last throughout the school career.
  • It is a developmentally appropriate, age-specific and culturally sensitive program.
  • It is a pretested program approved by officials, administrators, and counselors and was found to be "scientifically accurate, in conformance with public health principles and policies and appropriate for the intended audience" by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.
  • This program appears in the resource libraries of the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information and the Texas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse.
